You have some malformed HTML within your category.tpl file.
I can tell this by the fact that it only occurs when your category displays products, also you grid to list toggle link does not function, re-instate a fresh copy of the file and it will fix this.

You shouldn't need to do that, I have just added some text on my store and mine shows up straight away. You have me baffled. The only thing I can think of now is that you have previously added that text next to the name on the featured module (which is shown on the home page by default) and are now ...

View the source of your page and see if is showing up in there. The only thing I can think of is that there is not enough room within to display them on screen

Hello,
I have a bit of an odd problem with the search box in the header of my store, it only ever returns results for the word search no matter what term I put in the box.
Has anyone ever come across thi before?

You must have those modules assigned to the sitemap page layout.
Check in your back office for all the modules that are showing (and are not suppose to be)
