found the problem, it was that i had both php.ini and php5.ini
noticed it when i setup the site on a different host where it worked fine

Simpler change of product images in catalog/product
clicking on the product image in admin/index.php?route=catalog/product does nothing atm please make it so it opens the select file dialog in the operating system and not the image manager (meybe a option to switch between the two in settings?) this will save alot of time adding new images to product...

make backup and restore version neutral?
making it version neutral would make it easy to import a backup of a older database into a newer opencart version
