Having switched from Magento to Opencart I can tell you Opencart blows away Magento. I endured 2 years of hell dealing with the slow ass Magento and constant updates that tended to break things. I was repeatedly told that Opencart could not scale to my high volume website. Now on Opencart, I have a blazing fast website. I made the switch on January 25th and at this point, all the bumpy spots have been smoothed. I do recommend checking speed levels after every extension installation. Long live Opencart!

Magento. Looked great when it came out but ran very slow and probably still does unless you have a very high end server. Like others, it brought me to Opencart and I've never looked back.

Magento also has a big problem with exploits and the update process is nearly impossible, i have had some stores on magento and opencart but opencart is by far the better one!

I think you mean the engine from a Sinclair C5. :)

Magento is a large platform with lots of function and tools. Both Magento and OpenCart has designed for large online stores. OpenCart is a big platform, but it is not equipped with as many tools as the Magento. In every term, Magento is better than Opencart, but if you are beginner, Opencart is right for you. I agree the Enterprise version of Magento is pretty good but you have to have a powerful server and deep pockets to run it.

I had some worries after populating my store with 6k products and many subcategories, but when you iron out the dents opencart picks back up its blazing speed. It's all about tweaking but its surely faster than magento.
