PHP error logs. Don't use the internal backup tool of the platform. Rather use the File Manager to create a ZIP file of your store and backup your database from your host console. Or, you could use the backup tool entirely from your host console period.

Always worth dumping your database from your host/phpMyAdmin after any extension installs also.
The database backup tool will only [by default] restore data, it won't restore a database. Granted it would be exceptional that you would need to restore the entire database, but things happen.
