This transaction cannot be processed due to an invalid merchant configuration

I get this error with both the PayPal Website Payment Pro and PayPal Payments Pro (UK) extensions
are these extensions and the purchase of a pro account the only way to get accept credit card payments through paypal functionality?

Any help appreciated

That means something does not match exactly between either your PayPal account (where you set button codes) or the PayPal instructions (which do contain flaws) and your PayPal payment module. It could be your own ID (such as syntax in your e-mail address or your ID code), a URL (such as inadvertently spelling out a session ID that was one-shot anyway), a transaction parameter (extra, missing, or in mistaken syntax), or the like. The mismatch can be very simple and elude you for a while. Find that and fix it. Test by touching the genuine payment portal, not the sandbox, and do not use the sandbox settings themselves for the real deal.
