You can reward for buying more items, products of the same kind or different types of products. In all 3 cases you can use ranges. As many as you like.

Here is the formula:

When you reward customers:

PRICE * MULTIPLIER = points - customer GETS
Example case 1: $100 * 1 = 100 points
Example case 2: $100 * 0,05 = 5 points

When customers purchases:

PRICE x MULTIPLIER = points - customer GIVES
Example case 1: $5 * 20 = 100 points
Example case 2: $5 * 1 = 5 points

See, you can achieve same goal with two different configurations.
I'd recommend using the second case scenario since customer get the feeling of GETTING REAL money.
This way you tell them indirect "You have $5 in your account and they wait for you to get them".
It is much more catchy to say you have $20 waiting for you on next order instead of 400 points.
Customers don't need to calculate point to currency ration this way and THE EASIER FOR THEM THE MORE SALES FOR YOU.
