This little modification allows you to use external URLs for product images and you will still be able to assign local images as well. This might be helpful, if you have a 3rd party supplier or don't actually keep any products yourself. You will save a lot of disk space by using external image links.

▸ Images are displayed the same way they're displayed when uploaded locally.
